New shape for news

There’s little to doubt that the media downturn will claim jobs and titles. Emily Bell of the Guardian estimated at worse the 25% of titles could be lost from the UK national press.

Such a reshaping of the industry will leave fewer newspapers and, if job cuts continue, the ones remaining will be slimmed-down operations. But these newsrooms will still need to produce products that readers will pay for and that advertisers will spend money with.

Stewart Fitzpatrick, former editor of the Scotsman website, sees gloom for Scottish titles unless they learn to make money out of their digital offerings. Desktop Hack has quoted him:

“The Herald and the Scotsman are both going the same way in trimming down their news teams as they try to be more cost effective. But this is just a knee-jerk reaction and does nothing to address the real problems. If they don’t change their business models and find ways to make money out of their online offerings fast, they will both be gone in 5 years.”

But newspapers sell more than printed [or digital] words. They sell editorial judgment and [in theory] an independent, unbiased take on the events of the day. And there will still be a market for this.

Rupert Murdoch says the challenge is to move “from news papers to news brands”:

“… if papers provide readers with news they can trust, we’ll see gains in circulation: on our web pages, through our RSS feeds, in emails delivering customised news and advertising, to mobile phones.”

So, news will still sell – just in a new format.

Christmas cuts at Channel 4

Channel 4, the UK broadcaster, plans to cut more jobs than it first thought. On Thursday it said it would increase by a third the number of job cuts across divisions from 150 to 200. The cuts were expected to be completed by the end of the week – five days before Christmas.
A weakening economy and falling advertising revenues have hurt Channel 4 and it has said it will be losing £150m by 2012.
However, the FT has reported the broadcaster is in talks with BBC Worldwide about a possible rescue plan, under which it would invest £500m into a new media company.
